One-on-One Organizing Conversations: Steps & Practice

ONLINE (WAITLIST) - April 16, 2024 - 1-3PM US Eastern Time

One-on-ones are an essential craft of base-building. They’re how we invite people into our work, identify leaders, encourage people to take action, discover opportunities for our campaigns, and more. Having a clear sequence of steps helps you prepare for and meet your one-on-one goals.  This online workshop shares a structure for one-on-ones to use as scaffolding in your organizing conversations. If one-on-ones are like a dance, this workshop overviews the basic ‘dance steps’ to build upon, with time for practice.

Length: 2 hours, online

BY THE END OF THE TRAINING, YOU WILL…

  • Understand best practices for recruitment, drawing from your and other participants’ experiences
  • Learn a model of the steps in a one-on-one organizing conversation and get practice with preparing for a one-on-one using the model
  • Have practice doing a one-on-one with other participants, while giving and receiving feedback
  • Gain deeper awareness of yourself as a basebuilder and organizer

WORKSHOP FEE

We offer the following sliding scale fee options:

$35
$95
$150
$200
$250
$0, full scholarship

Our sliding scale honors different abilities to pay and helps us compensate trainers, coordinators, and accessibility providers fairly. The true cost to attend this workshop is $150. We ask organizations and individuals with large budgets to pay at the higher rates to keep the workshop accessible to all. We acknowledge the different costs and considerations around your attendance, including childcare/caregiving, time away from paid work, and more, and we offer lower fee options to support your attendance. You'll need to pay by credit card when registering online. If you prefer to pay without a credit card, please contact us before registering.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP?

This training is for community, labor, and electoral organizers across sectors and issues. We welcome new and more experienced organizers, including those who have participated in one-in-one trainings previously.

Our 6 Step model for one-on-ones might be most useful for organizers in base-building organizations and campaigns who are conducting or plan to conduct cold contact recruitment (ie, door canvassing), but it can be applied across diverse organizing scenarios. The workshop will provide relevant learning for and space to connect with organizers across various contexts.

WORKSHOP FORMAT

This is an interactive online training using the Zoom platform. Come prepared to participate fully, just as you would an in-person training. Please try to connect from a quiet place on a computer with headphones. A computer with a webcam and high-speed internet are recommended to get the most out of the training.

Details for how to connect will be sent prior to the training. The training will include follow-up resources you can use after, including handouts and a recording.

ACCESSIBILITY

This training will take place online in the Zoom meetings platform. Our trainings offer multiple ways to engage in activities and we do our best to apply best practices in visual accessibility on our slides and handouts including using high contrast and alt text. Closed captioning, sign language interpretation, and advanced copies of the slides are offered if requests are received up to 1 week before the training.

If there is anything else that would make this training more accessible to you, please email us directly or make a note in your registration form.
