TFC associate designs curriculum for disabilities rights' organization   PDF  Print  E-mail
TFC Associate Betsy Raasch-Gilman was asked by Advocating for Change Together (ACT) in 2004 to help them lead more effective trainings. ACT is a radical grassroots rights orgnaization run by and for people with with developmental or other disabilities. ACT's mission is to help people across disabilities to see themselves as part of a larger disability rights movement and make connections to other civil and human rights struggles.

Over the past two years she has designed curriculum on power (even in the social service setting), conflict resolution, persuasion and negotiation. The units, available on ACT's website, are:

  • Power Switch (looking at power-over, power-with, and power-from-within, and how power is experienced and expressed)
  • Hidden Power (an extended role-play highlighting where power lies within the social service system)
  • Intro to Conflict (identifying different styles of conflict, and where they might be useful)
  • Persuasion (how to use persuasion to resolve conflicts)
  • Bargaining and Negotiating (how to do this to resolve conflicts)

Betsy describes her experience working with ACT, "Self-advocacy is a corner of the larger movement for justice and democracy that I knew nothing about until ACT hired me for trainings. I've been challenged and enriched by what I've learned from people with developmental disabilities, and pleased with how well they can use my tools to make a better world for themselves and for all of us. "
